Here's a list of the topics that will be on the exam. Don't forget that the information on the activities and the film clip (preemie baby) is fair game as well.
Competition for resources (6)
This was covered in activity 3. You should understand what happens to one population if another is affected (e.g. If the crayfish population decreases, what does that do the raccoons that eat them?)
Nutrition and Digestion (37)
Why do we eat? What is a calorie? What is the difference between undernourished and malnourished? What are the basic food types that we talked about, what supplies them, and why do we need them?
Respiration (36)
Why do we breathe? What are some examples of respiratory surfaces? How do we breathe? What happens to the lungs as a result of smoking, emphysema, or asthma? Why do premature babies have a hard time breathing?
Cardiovascular System and Circulation (35)
What is the purpose of the circulatory system? How many chambers are there in different animals hearts? What is the path that the blood follows as it flows through the body and lungs? How is blood pressure related to passing out? What happens in the circulatory system if hypertension or atherosclerosis develops? What is a heart attack, or a stroke?
Kidneys and Ionic Balance (38)
Why do we have kidneys (one type of osmoregulatory organ)? In what forms is nitrogen removed from the body? What is the purpose of the nephron? How is reabsorption controlled in the kidneys? What happens if your kidneys stop working? How else does your body lose water?
Communication: Nervous System (43)
What is the basic component of the nervous system? What types of neurons are there? How is the electrical current created in a neuron? How do signals pass between neurons? What happens in Myasthemia Gravis or Charcot Marie Tooth Syndrome?
Communication: Endocrine System (39)
What are the four ways secretions can act? What is a positive feedback loop? What is a negative feedback loop? What hormones do the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal gland secrete? What are their effects?
DON'T FORGET THE FINAL IS ON TUESDAY MAY 4 AT 3:30 PM IN OUR CLASSROOM.
To calculate your grade, add the first 4 numbers on your slip (your quizzes). Add 10 if you were in class today. Divide by 5 and write down the result in a separate column.
Add the next 5 numbers (1 or 0) and write the result under your quiz grade.
Add the next 2 numbers (your paper grades), multiply by .1 (10%) and write that result in the column with your quiz and activity score.
Add 2 points to each of the next two numbers (your test scores), then multiply each score by .25 (25%). Write those results in the column with the other numbers.
Add up all the points and divide by 75. This is your current % grade.
To determine what you need on the final to get the grade you want, subtract your total in the column from 90 for an A, 80 for a B, 70 for a C, and 60 for a D. Multiply the difference by 4. This is the score you need on the final exam.
EX: Current points = 65. I desire a B in the course, so I subtract 65 from 80 (80-65=15). Then I multiply 15 by 4 (15 x 4 = 60). I need a 60% on the final to get a B in the class.
Good Luck!!
